“We have focused on light, comfortable fabrics in the Kingsland Earth summer 2019 collection. Fabrics of high quality that are durable and environmentally friendly. -A handful of carefully selected styles that will make you feel and look great this summer” says Kingsland product developer Agnes Dyvi Huitfeldt.

The clothing industry is about to shift from fast fashion to slow fashion. -We can clean the ocean for plastic and at the same time make cool clothing from the trash! Consumers would like to be environmentally friendly, but not compromise how they look.
During the last few years technology has become so advanced that it is now possible to spin clean, strong threads from plastic bottles (=polyester) and from the tens of thousands of old, wrecked fishing nets, thrown or left behind in the ocean (=nylon).

“The materials we have chosen to use so far in our Earth collection, are organic cotton and recycled polyester. The reason we have chosen to work with these two material groups is based on the fact that we make clothes that are meant to be used when riding and working in the stables. It is therefore important that the clothes are technical and practical. We have chosen to use polyester and cotton based on their comfortable properties. Together conventional cotton and polyester stands for almost 80% of today’s most commonly used fabrics in the fashion industry. Choosing better alternatives for these fibres therefore has the potential of large impacts. It is however, important to remember that even though we strive to make our products as sustainable as possible, even the most sustainable products, will leave footprints!”
Cotton stands for 35% of the world textiles, making it the 2nd largest after polyester. Only 0,7% of the grown cotton today is organic. It is therefore in short supply and often more expensive than conventional grown cotton. Here, there is great room for improvements and as a consumer/customer you can make a difference by always asking for organic cotton instead of conventional cotton.

Growing cotton is extremely demanding on both water and soil resources and it occupies large land areas. Farmers growing conventional cotton use a lot of insecticides and pesticides (chemicals) that are harsh for both human beings, wildlife and the soil. By growing cotton organically, the water and soil conditions improve dramatically through crop rotation and composting. Not forgetting that it reduces health hazards for both humans and animals.

Polyester is a bi-product of oil and stands for 79% of all synthetic fibres that we produce worldwide. Many things what we use in our everyday life has its origin in oil. -Medicine, cosmetic, paint, plastic bottles and many different fabrics.
Recycling the polyester from plastic bottles is a mechanical process where the bottles are used to make pellets that are then melted and stretched into threads ready to be woven or knitted into fabrics.
Using recycled polyester in the fashion industry means reducing the need for virgin oil-based products and is hence an important step towards more sustainable garments.
It takes 450 years for a plastic bottle floating around in the ocean, to break down to micro plastic. By reusing them, we give the plastic a second life as these soda bottles are the main source for fleece fabric. In the first Kingsland Earth collection last winter we even had a down jacket (Terran, 183E-OW-570) that was 100% recycled and where the fabric was made from recycling 11 plastic bottles!

The show shirts and polo shirts you find in this summer`s Earth Collection, has 7-8% Spandex/ Elastane mixed in with polyester to make the fabric stretchier. Unfortunately, there are no sustainable substitutes for the Spandex/Elastan in the marked at present.

ADVICES:
Many people talk about the micro waste that is released into the water when synthetic clothes are washed. We recommend that you get hold of a Goppyfriend washing bag!  The bag is a patented solution, that filters out the tiniest microfibers released from textiles during washing. Read more here:
